“I have to have straps. I don’t want to be pulling my dress up all night.”


We completely understand where that comes from. If you have ever worn a strapless top that constantly needed adjusting, the thought of wearing a strapless wedding gown for your entire wedding day can sound less than appealing.


But here is what many brides don't realize: a well-constructed strapless wedding gown is nothing like a strapless top from your closet.


A strapless wedding dress can actually be incredibly secure, supportive, comfortable, and beautiful. So before you automatically cross strapless off your list, let’s talk about what is really going on inside that beautiful bodice.


“But Won’t I Have to Pull It Up All Night?”


This is probably the biggest misconception about strapless wedding gowns.


The short answer is, you shouldn’t have to.


Wedding gowns are constructed very differently from everyday clothing. Depending on the designer and gown, the bodice may include boning, corsetry, structured lining, cups, waist stays, and carefully placed seams that all work together to create a secure fit.

One of our favorite moments is when a bride comes into her appointment absolutely convinced she needs straps, puts on a structured strapless gown, and says:


“Wait...this actually feels really secure.”


It happens all the time.


She starts walking around. She moves her arms. She sits down. She turns around and looks at the train.


And suddenly, she isn't thinking about the dress anymore.


She's just enjoying how she feels in it.


That's when the misconception starts to disappear.


What About Dancing?


We hear this one a lot, too.


You're going to dance, hug your family, sit down, walk around, take pictures, celebrate, and hopefully have the time of your life in your wedding gown.


A properly fitted strapless gown should allow you to do those things while maintaining its structure.


This is also where alterations make such a difference. Your gown should be professionally altered to fit your body, not simply ordered in a size and expected to fit perfectly right out of the box.


Your seamstress can make adjustments to help ensure the bodice fits securely and comfortably for your wedding day.


So don't assume that the way a gown feels while you're trying it on is exactly how it will feel once it has been properly fitted and altered for you.


Strapless Doesn't Mean Unsupported


This is probably the biggest takeaway we want brides to remember.


Strapless does not automatically mean unsupported.


Think about the difference between a structured strapless wedding gown and a casual strapless summer dress. They aren't remotely the same thing.


A bridal gown can provide support through the construction of the bodice rather than through shoulder straps.


That beautiful structure is one of the things that makes a wedding gown so different from everyday clothing.


And Then There Is the Beauty of Strapless


Beyond the construction and support, there is another reason strapless wedding dresses continue to be so popular.


They are simply beautiful.


A strapless neckline can create a clean, timeless silhouette. It can beautifully frame the shoulders and collarbone and allow the gown itself to be the star.


And strapless doesn't mean there is only one look.


You might love a straight neckline, a soft scoop, a sweetheart neckline, a basque waist, or a beautifully structured corset bodice.


There are so many different ways to wear strapless.


What If You Still Want Straps?


That's completely okay, too.


There is nothing wrong with wanting straps. Some brides simply feel more comfortable with them, and there are so many beautiful gowns with straps and sleeves.


Our point isn't that every bride should choose a strapless gown.


Our point is that you shouldn't eliminate an entire category of wedding gowns before you experience one for yourself.


You may put on a strapless gown and immediately know it isn't for you.
